The Fermi-Hubbard model, describing interacting fermions on a lattice, offers a simple framework to study strongly correlated fermionic phases. Closely related to the physics of high-temperature superconductors, the interplay between doping and magnetism in this model manifests itself very differently in one and two dimensions. [more]

Quantum algorithms and simulation for quantum many-body systems

Quantum many-body systems are very hard to simulate, as computational resources (time and memory) typically grow exponentially with system size. However, quantum computers or analog quantum simulators may perform that task in a much more efficient way. In this talk, I will first review some of the quantum algorithms that have been proposed for this task and then explain the advantages and disadvantages of analog quantum simulators. I will also describe a theoretical proposal to solve quantum chemistry problems with such devices. [more]

Geometric tangent plane methods and the Bose-Hubbard model

The paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model describes interacting bosons which can be experimentally realized with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. In this talk, I will focus on the superfluid phase and introduce geometric methods to find approximate ground states and quasi particle excitations. For the variational class of Gaussian states, we can systematically extend Bogoliubov theory and compute quasi particle excitations, life times and spectral functions. To our surprise, we find a bound state below the continuum. Depending on the interaction strength, the dispersion relation of the bound state enters the continuum for large momentum. I will conclude with discussing observable effects and how we can test if this finding is physical. [more]

MPHQ - Inauguration Ceremony

The official Inauguration ceremony of the MPHQ took place in January 2018. Around 200 participants listened to talks and presentations at the Institute for Advanced Study and the Deutsches Museum. Scientists from Harvard and MPQ presented and discussed their research projects and were able to convey their thrilling research topics to a larger public. The Max Planck Harvard Research Center for Quantum Optics was officially opened by Prof. Martin Stratmann, President of Max Planck Society, and Prof. Jeremy Bloxham FRS, Dean of Science, Harvard University. The scientific programme of the inauguration ceremony was completed by fascinating experimental demonstrations by Prof. Markus Greiner and Nobel laureate Prof. Wolfgang Ketterle. [more]
